Stephen Rintoul received the 2007 Georg Wüst Prize
Stephen Rintoul has made outstanding contributions to understanding the fundamental role the ocean - in particular the Southern Ocean - plays in the climate system and the broader Earth system. His work follows the tradition established by Georg Wüst together with Albert Defant more than half a century earlier: careful analysis of observations to develop new insights into the dynamics and structure of the large-scale circulation of the ocean. He has had a substantial influence on physical oceanography not only through his publications on the Southern Ocean circulation and processes, but also by his leadership of southern ocean research through several key international committees and on numerous field campaigns.
