Recipient of the Georg Wüst Prize 2009preistraeger_gwuest_2009_heywood

In 2009 the Georg-Wüst Prize of DGM was awarded to Prof. Karen J. Heywood of the University of East Anglia.
The nomination letter included the following reasons for her choice:
Outstanding physical oceanographer with a strong focus on field work at sea in the sense of Georg Wüst’s tradition, carefully planned cruises, application of a variety of novel methods at sea, sophisticated data analysis and a rich publication record of the obtained results, frequent utilization of remote sensing methods and close contact to modelling. She has been engaged in a variety of multidisciplinary projects from the Nordic Seas to the Southern Ocean.
In addition to her research efforts she was highly engaged in teaching and led numerous Ph.D. students to their grades. She intensively fostered international cooperation by participation in international steering and working groups as well as in international projects as partner and chair.
The combination of 19 years of successful field work and engagement in international cooperation is the most appropriate and clearest qualification to be nominated for the Georg Wüst Prize.
Prof. Heywood has also just been elected to the Council of the American “Oceanography Society” (TOS) as Physical Oceanography Representative (see http://www.tos.org/about/governance.html).
